Lionel Messi Retires From Argentina National Team After Legendary 21-Year Career

Lionel Messi has officially retired from international football, bringing one of the greatest national-team careers in football history to an end.

The Argentina captain announced his decision on August 31, 2026, after more than two decades in the famous blue-and-white shirt. Messi leaves the national team at age 39 with 207 appearances and 125 goals, making him Argentina’s all-time leader in both categories.

The announcement comes after Argentina reached the 2026 World Cup final, where Lionel Scaloni’s side lost to Spain. Messi had already led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and Copa América championships in 2021 and 2024.

Messi’s Argentina career comes full circle

Messi made his senior Argentina debut in August 2005. What followed was a remarkable journey filled with spectacular individual performances, painful defeats and, eventually, the international trophies that had eluded him for much of his career.

For years, Messi’s Argentina career was defined by one question: could he reproduce the extraordinary success he enjoyed at club level on the international stage?

That debate ultimately disappeared.

Argentina’s 2021 Copa América triumph broke through the barrier. Then came the achievement that changed Messi’s international legacy forever: the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Messi captained Argentina through one of the most memorable World Cup campaigns in history and finally lifted football’s biggest trophy. Argentina followed that success with another Copa América title in 2024.

One final World Cup run

At 39, Messi returned for one last World Cup in 2026. Argentina again reached the final before losing to Spain, giving Messi a remarkable second consecutive World Cup final appearance to close his international career.

That match would prove to be his last for La Albiceleste.

Is Lionel Messi retiring from football completely?

No. Messi’s announcement concerns international football only. He remains an Inter Miami player and is under contract with the MLS club through the end of the 2028 season.

The end of an era

Messi’s retirement closes a chapter that spans more than 20 years of international football. From devastating tournament defeats to lifting the World Cup trophy, few players have experienced a national-team journey as dramatic as his.

Argentina now begins something it has rarely had to contemplate during the modern era: life after Lionel Messi.
