Arda Güler’s Journey: From Injuries at Real Madrid to Euro 2024 Breakthrough

The usual line would be to say that Arda Güler needs no introduction. A highly-rated young talent, he joined Real Madrid for €20m plus €10m in incentives, one triggered by a Champions League title. By the time he stood before Madrid fans, he had already spent a year at the club. But he did need an introduction, and that’s why Ancelotti called him forward—a sign of care and confidence, an investment in his future.

Though fans had seen little of him, Güler had shown flashes of brilliance. Ancelotti praised his “gift,” but it was only visible in brief moments. The European Championship now offers Güler a chance to fully showcase his talent. “He is becoming a great player before our eyes,” said former Turkey international Arda Turan, “like a Hollywood film.”

However, Güler’s season didn’t go according to plan. Arriving at Madrid aged 18, injuries quickly derailed his progress—first a knee problem, then muscular issues. He didn’t play a minute until January, and opportunities remained limited as Madrid’s key players thrived. Despite this, Güler remained patient, focusing on improving and waiting for his chances.

When the title was secured, Ancelotti hinted that Güler would see more minutes, and he delivered with goals against Real Sociedad, Granada, Alavés, and Villarreal. Despite limited time on the pitch, he scored six goals from six shots on target, with a goal every 63 minutes—the best ratio in the squad. Ancelotti praised his future potential, saying, “The ball is in love with him.”

Heading into the European Championship, Güler is now in top condition, with Turkey’s coach Montella set to use him as a right winger. Though his season has been challenging, it has set him up for success, and this could be his moment to shine internationally. Ancelotti’s message was clear: “Step forward, kid.” Now, he’s ready.
