Goodbye, Leo: Lionel Messi’s Argentina Story Ends Where Few Thought It Ever Could

There was a time when Lionel Messi’s relationship with Argentina seemed destined to be remembered for what he didn’t win.

That feels almost impossible to believe now.

Messi announced his retirement from international football on August 31 after a 21-year senior career that ultimately became one of the great redemption stories in sport.

He leaves as Argentina’s most-capped player, its greatest goalscorer and, most importantly, a World Cup-winning captain.

Before the trophies came the pain

Messi’s club career produced trophies almost immediately. His Argentina career was different.

There was the 2014 World Cup final defeat. There were Copa América disappointments. There were endless comparisons with Diego Maradona and recurring questions about why Messi appeared more comfortable at club level than with his national team.

After another painful final defeat in 2016, Messi briefly announced that he was finished with international football before later returning.

Argentina would be grateful that he did.

Everything changed in 2021

Argentina’s Copa América triumph in Brazil changed the story. Messi finally had his senior international trophy.

Then came Qatar.

Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory transformed Messi from a player still chasing the one prize missing from his career into the captain who returned Argentina to the top of world football.

Another Copa América followed in 2024.

One last World Cup

At age 39, Messi made one more attempt. Argentina reached the 2026 World Cup final but could not repeat its 2022 triumph, losing to Spain.

Weeks later, Messi confirmed that the chapter was over.

What Argentina will remember

The goals will be remembered. The trophies will be remembered. But Messi’s Argentina career is perhaps best understood by remembering the distance between the heartbreak and the celebration.

He went from being questioned relentlessly to becoming the captain who delivered Argentina’s first World Cup in 36 years.

He went from walking away from international football to lifting the trophy Argentina wanted more than anything.

Now he walks away again — this time after completing the journey.
